William Scarbrough, Jr. Obituary

William R Scarbrough, Jr passed away on October 18 th , 2025 in Rhode Island at the age
of 97. He is predeceased by his first wife Anne L McLaughlin of 44 years, and his second wife
Carol Lamberti of 21 years. His youngest daughter, Anne Marie Scarbrough, passed away in
2001 at the age of 40. He is survived by his daughter Deborah Warga and husband Jeffrey, and
his son Ross Scarbrough and wife Debra. His grandchildren include Vanessa Benoit, Jonathan
Warga, Caitlin King and husband Jason, and Bill Scarbrough. His great-grandchildren are Paolina
and Liam Benoit. He also has numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, sister-in-law’s, and brother-
in-law’s. Bill enjoyed his time spent with his loved ones, and always hosted holidays and family
get togethers at his homes.
Bill was a graduate of Massachusetts Maritime Academy class of 1951, with a degree in
Marine and Electrical Engineering. He joined the USN for two years and then entered the Naval
Reserves until 1988, retiring as a Captain.
His many careers included the Merchant Marines, Royal Globe Insurance, Scarbrough’s
Beauty Salon, and was a longtime Marine Insurance executive with Wm H McGee.
During his career, Bill chaired the American Hull Insurance Syndicate, the American
Cargo War Risk Exchange, and the Cargo Reinsurance Association, as well as serving on the
Board of WQIS [Water Quality Insurance Syndicate]. He also served on many committees for
AIMU [American Institute of Marine Underwriters], and represented AIMU on IUMI’s
[International Union of Marine Insurance] Ocean Hull Committee. These career experiences
allowed Bill, in his retirement, to be an adjunct instructor at Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
Bill was a longtime resident of Cranford, NJ, were the Scarbrough family had several
businesses in the town. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club. Bill spent his retirement on
Cape Cod, where he was an active member of the Bourne Historical Society. He eventually
moved to Longboat Key, Florida, were he resided for over twenty years with his second wife
Carol. Bill was an avid golfer enjoying the sport well into his 90’s. He traveled extensively, in his
retirement, all over the world and the US. He enjoyed his Safari in Africa, visit to the Great Wall
of China and Opera Tours. He also enjoyed reading.
Bill will be interred at the National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts on December 5,
2025 at 11:15am with Military Honors. Lunch will follow at the Dan’l Webster Inn, Sandwich,
MA.
