Susan Bates Rasmussen, 80, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2024.
Born on May 5, 1944, the daughter of Alexander and Louise Bates. She spent her childhood growing up years in Pittsburgh, PA. After graduating from nursing school, she started out on a long and successful career in various aspects of nursing in different hospitals including Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, MA, and Roger Williams Hospital in Providence, RI. It was at these hospitals that she headed up Inservice Instruction, and Intensive Care and Critical Care Departments. Additionally, she worked ten years for Space Labs Heart Monitors, traveling across the country teaching hospital personnel how to use their equipment.
She was married for 42 years to the late Charles Lee Rasmussen. They lived for many years in Cranston and then in Jamestown. Subsequent to Charlie’s passing she continued to live in Jamestown where she was an active volunteer for the Jamestown Humane Society and a loyal fan of the island Police and Fire Departments. She resided in Cumberland for the past year. During her life with Charles they enjoyed participating in races with the Narragansett Sports Car Club. In addition, she and Charles enjoyedevery possible moment on several different sailboats as well as two power boats, spending time with friends and family in Allen Harbor, RI and as members of the Allen Harbor Naval Yacht Club. They had a great fondness for Bermuda, and made multiple trips there.
She leaves behind a brother, Geoffrey Bates, and his wife, Patti Connor of Londonderry, NH; a brother and sister-in-law, Ned W. and Susan P. Rasmussen of Cumberland, RI, and several much loved nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, and many friends who cared deeply for her.
Funeral services are respectfully omitted; burial will be private.
