Robert Ph.D. Obituary

82, of North Kingstown, died peacefully on Friday, January 21, 2011 with his family by his side. Born in Bristol, CT, he was a son of the late John R. Sonstroem and Melita (Rast) Sonstroem. He was the loving husband of Norma C. (Battista) Sonstroem.

Besides his wife, he leaves his three children: Lisa Kennally and her husband Tom; Glenn Carnevale; Kim Cook and her husband Michael. He was the father of the late Carolyn Forest, wife of John Forest. Loving grandfather of Matthew Kennally, Andrew Kennally, and Lillian Cook. Cherished brother of Edith Brinkman, Donald Sonstroem and many loving relatives.

He was a Professor Emeritus for the Department of Physical Education and Exercise Science at the University of Rhode Island for 28 years until his retirement in 1997. Dr. Sonstroem published primary research articles and contributed chapters for nine books. He presented many papers at scientific meetings and was recognized as an international authority on self-esteem in exercise and sports. He was the author of the novel, "Diamond Rewards."

Dr. Sonstroem was the former Program Director for the Boys' Club of Bristol, CT; a Teacher, Basketball Coach, and Baseball Coach of Chester High School, Chester, VT; Assistant Professor and Head Basketball and Baseball Coach of Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY. Dr. Sonstroem was a graduate of Springfield College, where he received his B.S. and M.S. in Humanities and Physical Education. He received a Doctorate of Philosophy in Educational Psychology from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Sonstroem was a Deacon of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Providence. He enjoyed reading, hiking, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday February 5, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 445 Elmwood Avenue, Providence. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours are respectfully omitted.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 445 Elmwood Avenue, Providence, RI 02907 would be appreciated. Arrangements have been entrusted to THE CRANSTON-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME of WICKFORD.
