Norman E. “Rusty” Whitney, Jr. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Norman E. Whitney, Jr., affectionately know as “Rusty” on August 1, 2025, at RI Hospital. Born on January 15, 1948, Rusty lived a life full of dedication and warmth, leaving us at the age of 77.
Rusty was the cherished son of the late Norman E. (Red) and Shirley (Larson) Whitney. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He served as a pillar of strength and kindness for all who knew him.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Rusty carried his sense of duty and commitment into a long and fulfilling career. He dedicated over 45 years to Anvil Corp (formerly Grinnell Corp), where his work ethic and integrity were held in high regard by colleagues and friends alike.
Beyond his professional life, Rusty found joy in nurturing the next generation through his volunteer efforts. He spent countless hours coaching youth organizations, including Warwick Boys and Girls Club Soccer, Apponaug Girls Softball, and Boy Scouts Troop 1. His positive influence left a lasting impact on the many young lives he touched.
Rusty’s memory will forever be cherished by his loving wife Joyce of 51 years, their beloved children, Christopher, Jessica, and James Whitney of Warwick. He was the proud grandfather of Stephen Fancher and Christopher (CJ), also from Warwick. Rusty is survived by his brother Stephen Whitney (Dale), and his sister Laurie Linden (Fred), who will remember him warmly for his unwavering love and support, and his cherished nieces and nephews, his brothers-in-law, Donald (Joyce), Paul (Annemarie), and the late Irving (Maureen).
Rusty’s legacy is one of love, service, and quiet strength. His family and friends will continue to honor his memory and celebrate a life well-lived.
Funeral Services will be held at THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 12:00PM. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 10:00AM-12:00pm.
Interment with Military Honors will be held immediately after at the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI.
