Norman Gaylor, Jr. Obituary

Norman James Gaylor, Jr., 80, of Cranston, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at home surrounded by loved ones. Born in Central Falls, he was the son of the late Norman J. Gaylor, Sr. and Gladys (McCreadie) Gaylor.

Norman was a cherished member of the West Bay community for eight years. He had an extraordinary memory for geography, often reflecting on the places he visited as a child with his family. Norman would fondly ask if those spots still existed, and when he felt up to it, he loved sharing stories from his adventurous youth. That adventurous spirit stayed with him throughout his lifehe once rode in a NASCAR, zooming around the track at 70 miles per hour, and even invited those close to him on a thrilling helicopter ride over Watch Hill and Westerly.

Norman found joy in the small things, whether it was planning meals and snacks, meticulously folding blankets the "right way" countless times, or watching Mighty Joe Young as often as possible, which usually led him to say, "I got an idea."

He celebrated his 80th birthday with a wonderful celebration alongside his dear friend Anthony. Even as he aged, Norman stayed active, regularly bowling, attending car shows, visiting the circus, and, perhaps most exciting of all, attending the races at Seekonk Speedway three times this summer. While he had a deep passion for NASCAR and car racing, it was his charm, sass, and warmth that made him so cherished by those who knew him.

Though Norman was fearless in so many ways, one thing weighed on his hearthe often wondered how people felt about him. But when he received the reassurance he longed for, his smile was truly unforgettable. More than anything, Norman, like all of us, simply wanted to be accepted, and over the last six years, he found a true home with his friends, Marilyn and Anthony.

Norman's passing is a tremendous loss for all those who were lucky enough to know him. He lived a life filled with adventure, joy, and love. You will be missed deeply, but your memory will live on in our hearts forever.

In addition to his friends, roommates, and support team, Norman is survived by his beloved sister, Linda E. Gaylor Massey, with whom he shared a deep and special bond. Over the past year, Linda spent a great deal of time with Norman, and she was incredibly important to him. Despite being in hospice care for over a year, Norman rallied and had quite the year. Throughout his journey, Linda was always by his side, providing constant comfort and support. He is also survived by his nephew, Mark Massey (Andrea) of Pawtucket, two grandnephews, several cousins, and his close family friend, Daryl Holburn.

A Celebration of Normans Life will be held on Monday, September 16, 2024 at 11:00AM at THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick. Visitation will be held prior from 9:30AM-11:00AM. Burial will be private.
