Mary Egan Obituary

Mary Josephine Egan (O'Connell), 87, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, surrounded by her loving and forever indebted family.

Born on April 8, 1939, Mary Jo was the daughter of James and Josephine (Garcia) O'Connell. She was a lifelong learner who wore many hats and had many wonderful jobs throughout her life. Her most treasured job was being a mother to her eight children. Mary Jo worked tirelessly and endlessly bringing joy everywhere she went, to know her was to love her.

Mary Jo and the love of her life, John Joseph Egan Jr. were wed on June 25, 1960. Two doers and dreamers, they went on to create a beautiful family as always intended.

Mary Jo is survived by her beloved children, John Joseph Egan III  of Warwick, Maureen Ricci (John) of Smithfield, Nancy Barta (Paul) of Warwick, Barbara Egan of Warwick, Daniel Egan (Donna DeMarco) of Bristol, Kathleen Usler (Erik) of West Greenwich, Patricia Egan of North Providence, and Elizabeth Egan Small (Eric) of Broomall, Pa.

Nothing made Mary Jo prouder than watching her family grow. She was the devoted grandmother of Sam, Jamie, Jack, Emma, Julia, John, Sidney, Fiona, Claire, Grace, Sullivan, James, Egan, Cecelia, Georgia, Tyler, Anna, Harrison, Ireland, Vincent, John, and Eden. She celebrated each of them for exactly who they were and loved them beyond measure as they did her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Joseph Egan Jr., who was taken far too soon on June 20, 1986, and by their firstborn daughter, Mary, who died at birth. Though John’s passing left an immeasurable void, Mary Jo continued to live each day with purpose, joy, and unwavering devotion to her family and faith, while always holding onto the hope that one day they would be together again. We find great comfort in knowing she is with them and finally with God.

Mary Jo is survived by her sisters Frances O'Connell of Barrington, Josephine (Maryellen Butke) O'Connell of Warwick, Martha Lynch (Michael) McNamara of Warwick. Mary Jo's love and legacy will live on in her sisters, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends, whose lives she touched in countless ways.

She was predeceased by her siblings Father James O'Connell, Dorothy O'Connor, Robert O'Connell, Joseph O'Connell and Katherine Fitz-Simon.

Family and friends are invited to gather to celebrate the extraordinary life of Mary Jo, whose greatest joy was the people she loved.
