Joseph Gilmartin Obituary

Joseph A. Gilmartin, 59, of Narragansett, died October 14, 2024, at South County Hospital. He was the loving husband of Mary K. Barden. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Joseph T. Gilmartin, III and Betty Lou (Anderson) Gilmartin.

Joe was a history teacher, football, baseball, basketball, and hockey coach at North Kingstown Schools and at Bishop Feehan High School. He achieved awards throughout his coaching career including several Coach of The Year acknowledgements from multiple organizations. He was an avid fisherman, outdoorsman, and member of the RI Shellfisherman’s Association.

Joe had a passion for helping others whether it was on the field, in the classroom, or in the neighborhood. He was proud to be invested in the North Kingstown community throughout his life, making a difference in those he crossed paths with. His love for fishing in Rhode Island and Alaska was only outmatched by his love for his children.

He leaves his loving children Joseph S. Gilmartin of South Kingstown, Theresa L. Gilmartin of Nashville, TN, and Benjamin M. Gilmartin of North Kingstown, from a previous marriage to Karen A. Gilmartin of North Kingstown. Cherished brother of Linda J. Hancock of Cumberland, Judy L. Gilmartin of North Kingstown, Robyn G. Gilmartin of Bethlehem, NH, and the late Patricia A. Ponte. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

His Funeral Service will be held Monday, October 21, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. in the North Kingstown United Methodist Church, 450 Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown, RI. Burial will be private.  Kindly Omit Flowers. Memorial gifts in his memory to the Pt. Judith Fisherman’s Scholarship Fund Inc. PO Box 386 Narragansett, RI 02882.
