John Giro Obituary

John J. Giro, 95, of North Kingstown, died peacefully on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at the RI Veterans Home.He was the husband of the late Mary V. (Chrobak) Giro.Born in Gardner, MA, he was a son of the late James J. Giro and Athanasia (Paskalsy) Giro.

A 28-year veteran of the armed forces, Mr. Giro served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam with the rank of SPCO.He was awarded USN Sailor of the Year in 1964 and was a recipient of the Honor Flight.He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 42.

Upon retirement from the Navy, John was employed as a Postal Worker with the United State Postal Service until his retirement.He was a member of the National Association of Federal Retired Employees (NARFE) and a member of the United States Postal Workers Union.

He was a Communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church and member of the Knights of Columbus St. Francis Council 2011 in North Kingstown, where he was a Fourth Degree Knight.

John was a member of the Old Antarctic Explorers Association.

He leaves his loving children: John S. Giro and his wife Marybess Skaletsky of Windham, ME, Gail N. Hobday and her husband S. Robert Hobday, III of East Greenwich, Christine M. Hallam and her husband John F. Hallam of Johnston, and his son-in-law Arnold Tex Mohring of North Kingstown.He was the father of the late Deborah A. Mohring.Cherished grandfather of Eric L. Mohring and his wife Melissa of North Kingstown and Kirsten A. Mohring of Londonderry, NH.He was the brother of Bessie Zona of Millbury, MA, Georgia Betsekas of Capitola, CA, and Steven Giro of Millbury, MA.

Relatives & friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, August 30, 2024 at 11:30 A.M. in St. Francis de Sales Church, 381 School Street, North Kingstown. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery. Calling hours are respectfully omitted.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to the Rhode Island Veterans Home, 480 Metacom Avenue, Bristol, RI 02809 will be appreciated.
