George D’Amico, 87, a long-time resident of Warwick, died peacefully on January 14, 2026, at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice, Providence.
He was the beloved husband of the late Joan C. (Walker) D’Amico, who passed away on February 7, 2020. They were married on February 20, 1965, at Our Lady Mercy Church, East Greenwich.
Born in Providence on January 23, 1938, he was the son of the late Giuseppe and Anna (Benedetti) D’Amico. George graduated from Cranston High School in 1955 and Rhode Island College in 1959, where he was a member of the soccer team and the Kappa Delta Phi fraternity.
After graduation, George started his career as a mathematics teacher in the Providence Public Schools, first teaching at Gilbert Stuart School until 1967, when he began teaching at Central High School. He became the Mathematics Department Head there in the early 1970’s and remained in that position until his retirement in 1990.
George was a man of many interests and talents. He built each of the three houses in which he and his family lived. After retiring from teaching in 1990, George put his carpentry skills to use by assisting with set construction for The Academy Players and working for a small local home remodeling business.
Gardening was another of George's passions. He and Joan maintained large vegetable gardens along with shrubbery, flowers, and a handful of fruit trees. Even after downsizing to a condominium just over six years ago, George continued to garden, starting a handful of plants from seeds indoors in the winter, then continuing to nurture them on his small outdoor patio when warmer weather arrived. This past season's harvest included tomatoes, cucumbers, and basil.
George enjoyed many activities including: boating, jazz music (especially Dave Brubeck), theater, and traveling. He and Joan, along with friends, went on numerous trips to destinations in the US, Canada, Europe, and Bermuda.
Mr. D’Amico is survived by his four children: David D'Amico of Cranston, Janice Tapley and her husband Michael of Hope Valley, Jennifer Hawkins and her husband Scott of West Greenwich, and Daniel D'Amico and his wife Laura of Hope Valley, as well as his granddaughter, Paige D'Amico of Hope Valley. He is also survived by his brother, John C. D’Amico of Greenville, and his sister, Helen Olney of Kissimmee, FL. He was the brother of the late Rose Andreozzi, Theresa Bowman, Joan Wilson and Francis D’Amico.
