Edward L. “Ed” Murphy, a kind, generous, and selfless man, passed away on April 29, 2026, in Providence, Rhode Island, at the age of 84.
Born on August 21, 1941, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, he was the beloved son of the late Bartholomew and Sarah G. (Larkin) Murphy. He was raised with the values of hard work, compassion, and loyalty that would guide him throughout his life and shape the way he treated everyone he met. Those who knew him well will remember a man whose steady presence, warm heart, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on family, friends, and colleagues alike.
Ed dedicated much of his professional life to Murphy Funeral Homes, where he served as President. In that role, he carried out his responsibilities with dignity, professionalism, and a deep sense of care for the families he served. He understood that the work was about more than business, and he approached each day with respect for the trust placed in him. His leadership reflected his character, and he earned the admiration of those who worked beside him. Through his years of service, he became known not only for his competence, but also for his compassion and his sincere concern for others during times of loss.
A man of strong principles and gentle manners, Ed was the kind of person who made others feel heard and valued. He had a generous spirit and a thoughtful way of helping those around him, often without seeking recognition. His kindness was evident in the way he spoke to people, the patience he showed, and the care he extended to those in need. He gave himself freely and consistently, and his selflessness was one of the defining qualities of his life. He was the cherished son of the late Bartholomew and Sarah G.(Larkin) Murphy, and he carried their legacy with pride. He was also the cousin of the late Virginia T. Robertson, Barbara Zarella, and Ruth M. Gleason. These family connections were part of the fabric of his life, and he valued the bonds of kinship throughout the years. His life was enriched by the love and history of his family, and he remained mindful of the people who shaped his story.
Ed’s life was one marked by devotion to others, steady leadership, and a sincere desire to do what was right. He will be remembered for the respect he showed to everyone he met and for the calm, reassuring manner that made him a source of comfort to many. His legacy is one of service, compassion, and unwavering decency. The example he set will continue to be felt by those whose lives he touched, and his memory will remain a source of comfort and admiration.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial ,on Thursday May 7,2026 at 11:00am in St. Gregory the Great Church, 360 Cowesett Road, Warwick. Burial will be private.
