Edmund P. Caires, age 93, passed away April 28, 2026, at the home of his daughter JoAnn Rego in Palm Coast, Florida.
Born in West Warwick on May 19,1932, he was the son of the late Peter and Claudia (Lawrence) Caires Mello.
As a young man Edmund was employed at Beattie Lace Works Inc. From there he went on to the Arkwright–Interlaken Company where he worked until that company merged in 1973. His career then started in the Town of West Warwick where he eventually retired.
Eddie was a true gentleman of the fairways whose love for golf was matched only by his dedication to the game. Starting his journey as a young caddy, Eddie, (his friends called him Pop) developed an early passion for sport, teaching himself to play from the ground up. Through years of practice and sheer determination, he transformed that passion into mastery, becoming an exceptional scratch golfer. Whether he was playing in a tournament or a casual round, he brought precision, respect, and joy to every hole. The golf course was his sanctuary, and his legacy will continue to live on in every "perfect drive" taken by those he played with.
While he was a passionate golfer who cherished his time on the green, he had another talent which was dancing. Even in his 90s, despite a weak heart and shaky legs, the moment the music started, he was transformed. He continued to entertain family and friends on the dance floor, proving that his spirit was far stronger than his physical ailments.
He is survived his daughters Judith Caires of Warwick, JoAnn Rego (Norbert) of Coventry, and sons David Caires (Shaila) and Michael Caires (Shirley) of Coventry, and his sister Alice Sampaio of West Warwick. He leaves his grandchildren Robert Studley, Amanda Caires, Michael Caires and Victoria Caires and five great grandchildren. He leaves behind special friends Kim Dos Santos and her husband Paul Dos Santos in Palm Coast who was loved like a son who will sadly miss him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Peter Caires, Manny Caires, his sister Pearl Faria and his grandson William (Billy) Grandchamp.
His funeral will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 10 AM from THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick, RI with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM at St. Anthony’s Church, 17 Woodside Ave, West Warwick, RI. Interment will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, West Warwick.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 4:00PM to 6:00PM.
After the burial service family and friends are invited to a collation to celebrate his life at the Crowne Plaza Warwick, 801 Greenwich Ave, Warwick, RI.
