Charles W. Bauer

Charles W. Bauer, 80, of North Kingstown, RI, and formerly Burlington, CT, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, August 14th, 2024 surrounded by family. Charles was the loving husband of Sophia (Godfrey) Bauer for 46 years.

Charles, born and raised in Avon, Connecticut, graduated from Hamilton College and the University of Connecticut Law School. He served in the Peace Corps in Botswana after law school where he helped to guide the development of the countrys nascent judicial system. Upon his return to Connecticut, Charles began a long career in law and also served as the elected Judge of Probate for Burlington for over 30 years.

Charles was a man of enormous intellectual curiosity with a deep commitment to his community. He worked tirelessly to give back through his efforts with the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain and Historic Wickford. He was adept at gathering diverse groups of people together and driving enlightening conversations wherever he went. A well-traveled man, Charles loved to converse and connect with friends near and far always imparting his delightful wit and dry sense of humor. He loved living near the water and delighted in going out in his boat to explore the local waters. Charles was also a skilled artist, frequently enjoying painting and drawing in his past time, and sharing his love of art with his grandsons.

Charles love of family was palpable. He spoke proudly of the accomplishments of his daughter, son, grandsons, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law.

In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by his two children; daughter Stephanie (Bauer) Desjardins and son Justin Bauer, as well as his son-in-law Aaron Desjardins and daughter-in-law Perri (Hillsberg) Bauer, and his two grandchildren Nathan and Drew Desjardins.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Friends of the North Kingstown Library (RI) or the Burlington Library Association (CT).

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 11:00 AM in St. Pauls Episcopal Church, 55 Main Street, Wickford, RI.Burial in the Old Narragansett Church Cemetery will be private.Calling hours are respectfully omitted.
