Kenneth E. Smith,
77, of Coventry, passed away at home on August 13, 2011. Born in Warwick, May 13, 1934, to the late Harold A. (Retired Deputy Chief-WFD) and Dorothea (Fisher) Smith.
Ken retired from the former Nynex (Verizon) after 36 years of service as a cable splicer-outside work inspector.
Ken was a lifetime member of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Co. #1 and Museum - serving in many roles. Throughout his life at the station, he loved serving. Ken was awarded the R.I. Life Saving Award for heroism in 1959.
He was a member of the East Greenwich Fireman's Association, RI Antique Fire Apparatus, Life Member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Quonset Sams Chapter #1 of the R.I. Good Sam's.
He leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Charlotte (Jacques) Smith, 4 children: Kristen Brandriff (Robert), Denise Perry (Richard), Diane Balkovic (Edward) and Kenneth N. Smith (Ret. WFD), (Heidi), 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. One brother, James Smith (Retired Chief WFD) (Barbara).
Calling hours 4-8 pm on Tuesday in THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95). A Christian Service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11:00 am. Burial at Quidnessett Cemetery, North Kingstown, RI.
