Edward A. "Ed" Murphy, Ret. Cmd Sgt Major,
91 years of age,
passed into eternal rest Monday, March 28 at Roberts Health Centre. He was pre deceased by his beloved wife of 56 years "Kay" Murphy in November 2008.
Born June 5,1919 in "Kelley's Cross" P. E. I., Canada he was the son of Richard and Maggie Murphy of Haverhill, MA and the oldest brother to Peggy Murphy, Dorothy Murphy, Richard "Dickey" Murphy, Joe Murphy, Leo Murphy, Bill "Rock" Murphy, Jimmie Murphy, and Marilyn "Mal" Murphy. The father of Edward M. Murphy of Riverside, Kathleen M. Middlemiss of Coventry, and Thomas J. Murphy of Saunderstown. Loving Grandfather to Heather, Tina, and Keith.
Ed served his country proudly in the US Army and retired as an E-9 Command Sergeant Major with 26 years active service from 1942-1969. In WW II he was combat activated in both the Asiatic-Pacific as well as the European-African-Middle Eastern campaigns. In the Korean War he was in the Chosin reservoir battles. He then went on to 3 Asiatic tours during the Vietnam war. He was the Recipient of Numerous Battle Stars, Campaign ribbons, Good Conduct medals, 2 Bronze Stars, 2 Silver Stars with Oak Leaf Clusters and The Combat Infantry badge with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. He was the Sergeant Major of The Post at Fort Dix, New Jersey from 1967 until his retirement.
Ed also worked for 15 years in the Wickford Post Office after his retirement from the US Army. A longtime member of the Wickford Club and VFW Post, he enjoyed the Red Sox World Series Victory in 2004 and loved to watch golf as he played to a low handicap in his earlier years. He enjoyed his lunches at Oatleys in Exeter and the Newport Creamery in North Kingstown. He enjoyed his bi-monthly haircuts to Bob's Barber Shop in North Kingstown. A simple, modest man who along with his beloved wife Kay were from the greatest generation.
Ed's family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the Staffs at South County Hospital and Roberts Health Centre along with Odyssey Hospice for all their care of Ed.
His Funeral Mass and burial with Military Honors will be private. Calling hours are respectfully omitted.
