John F. Coutcher, Sr.,
Retired Warwick Police Chief, passed away Wednesday at home. He was the husband of the late Gloria H. (Stevens) Coutcher for 60 years. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Arthur and Catherine (Kelly) Coutcher.
John served on the Warwick Police Department for 35 years, 10 years as Chief, until his retirement in 1988. He also served in The United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Police Chiefs Association, was active in many state and local organizations and served as Moderator and Selectman in Prospect Harbor, Maine.
He was the beloved father of Laurene M. Robillard and her husband Duke of Pawtucket, Joanne I. Ferri of Long Beach, CA, Theresa C. Sokolowski and her husband Edward of Warwick and the late John F. Coutcher, Jr. Caring father-in-law of Kelly Coutcher of Warwick. Loving brother of Robert P. Coutcher of Zephyrhills, FL, Charles Coutcher of Woonsocket, Kenneth Coutcher of Hemet, CA and the late Arthur Coutcher, Raymond Coutcher, Marie McKenna and Iva Soule. Cherished grandfather of eleven and the late Kimberly Coutcher and great-grandfather of seven.
His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:45 am from THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95) with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, Warwick. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Friday 4-8 pm.
