James M. Munro, Jr.,
80, of Jamestown, died peacefully on Friday, April 6, 2012 at John Clarke Retirement & Nursing Center. Born in Newport, RI, he was a son of the late James M. Munro, Sr. and Frances (Vars) Munro. He was the beloved husband of Muriel (Brownridge) Munro for 59 years.
Mr. Munro was a 1949 graduate of North Kingstown High School and a 1958 graduate of the University of RI, where he earned his Bachelors degree. A private first class high speed-radio operator in the U.S. Army Infantry from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War, he also served in USCGR for 15 years in public relations and as a deck officer.
Mr. Munro was a General Assignment Reporter for the Bergen Evening Record in New Jersey, an Assistant Editor for Rudder Magazine, and as Associate Editor of Popular Boating Magazine, both in New York City. He was a Public Relations Specialist for Group W in New York and for its affiliate station KYW-TV, as well as The Mike Douglas Show in Cleveland and Philadelphia after the Cleveland station moved to the latter city. He was the Promotion Manager for KYW Radio and for RKO's WOR-TV in New York and the Manager of affiliate station advertising for the ABC television network in New York.
Mr. Munro served on the board of the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Association, on the vestry of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, a member of the Jamestown Community Theatre, the Jamestown Community Chorus, and the All-Guys Choir. He was a member of the former Washington Lodge # 5, AF & AM, now Mount Vernon Lodge # 4 of North Kingstown, and an ardent fan of the Cleveland Browns.
An avid reader, he loved his daily newspaper, periodicals, and mystery novels. With the exception of cats, he loved all animals, especially birds and dogs. He was a Rocket Dawg, a Turtle, and the Walrus.
Besides his wife, he leaves his three devoted children, Keith C. Munro and his wife Charlene of Poughquag, New York, Scott D. Munro and his wife Deborah of Liberty Township, Ohio, and Jenny M. Munro and her companion Victor Davis of Farmington, CT. Cherished grandfather of Brendan, Connor, Tom, Max, Olivia, Summer, and Sasha. He was the brother of Bruce Munro of St. John, Virgin Islands.
His Requiem Eucharist will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 11:00 am in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 87 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown. Burial will be private. Calling hours are respectfully omitted.
