Herbert E. Coates, 79, Locust Glen Drive, Cranston, RI passed away January 4, 2012 at the Veteran's Hospital in Providence, RI. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn (Vickers) Coates.

He was born in Watertown, Connecticut, the son of the late John T. and his wife Alice J. (Canfield) Coates.

Mr. Coates was a automobile mechanic for many years.

He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter Dawn P. Allen of Cranston, and a son John T. Coates of New York. He is also survived by his step-children, Howard, Buzzy, Alan, and William Whitmarsh, Cheryl Borges, Maureen Bradford, and Cynthia Bianco. He was the brother of Hilda Isom, Ann Letrell, and Dorothy Valente. He leaves eighteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

His funeral service will be held at the Columbarium, in the RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter, RI on Monday, January 12, 2012 at 11:00 am followed by full military honors.
