Gordon K. “Gig” Young, 77, of North Kingstown died at Kent Count Hospital on Tuesday, February 2, 2010. Born in Boston, MA, he was a son of the late Clarence Young and Helen (Gorman) Young of Needham, MA. He was the loving husband of the late Ann (Hooper) Young for nearly 50 years.
Gig was a career Marine, enlisting in 1953 as a Private. He proudly served his country for 20 years, retiring in 1973 with the rank of Major. Gig was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during one of his two tours of duty in Vietnam.
Upon retirement from the Corps, Gig enjoyed teaching ROTC at Johnston High School. He and his wife, Ann, successfully owned and operated the “Art Shanty of Wickford” next to their home on Main Street for nearly 15 years. The Shanty was a gallery, art supply, and custom framing business with an active artist workshop space.
The Shanty was home to the “Wickford Watercolor” seminars for many years. Gig was a talented artist who enjoyed working in a variety of media, but he was perhaps best known for his popular black and white prints of the Village of Wickford, some of which may still be found on logos and letterheads around town. Upon their retirement from the Shanty, Gig enjoyed a third career as a real estate appraiser.
He and Ann spent many happy hours driving around Rhode Island together combining his business with their enjoyment of a good lunch out. Gig was a 33 rd Degree Mason and a member of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Lodge No. 4.
He leaves four children, sons Kenneth A. Young and his wife Alyson Bailey of North Kingstown, and Linzee Scott Young and his wife Suzanne (Stufano) of Roslindale, MA, and daughters Deborah K. Young of Hallendale, FL and Jennifer E. Schnell and her husband Raymond of East Greenwich. Gig was the proud Grandfather of Kate and Philip Schnell of East Greenwich. He was the loving brother of Robert A. Young and his wife Eileen of Scituate, MA and Beverly J. Rader of Portsmouth, RI.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 10:30 am in THE CRANSTON-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME of WICKFORD, 140 West Main Street, Wickford Village, North Kingstown. Interment with full Military Honors will follow in The Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
