Homer Pine Smith

Homer Pine Smith (102) died on February 22 in Warwick. He was the son of the late William H. and Helena (Pine) Smith. He was the husband of the late Virginia (Walker) Smith.

He was a graduate of Groton Academy and Brown University where he also earned a Doctorate in Chemistry. He started his career at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and later became the head of the research lab at U.S. Rubber Co., now Uniroyal. Retiring in 1973, he returned to Rhode Island and lived with his widowed brother, the late Philip A. Smith in Edgewood.

The two brothers lived interesting lives. Homer traveled much, had a prolific garden, enjoyed hiking and camping, was a voracious reader especially of history, and was active in the Warwick Historical Society. For the past few years, Homer resided at West Bay Manor in Warwick where he recently became one of the charter members of the newly formed book group.

In addition to his brother, Philip Smith, he was also the brother of the late Rodman Smith. He leaves a large extended family and many friends including his immediate cousins living locally, William Pine Aldrich and Rev. Betsy Aldrich Garland, both of Warwick, Dr. Barbara Ann Pine of Guilford, CT and William B. Pine, III of East Greenwich.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit at THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95) on Monday March 1, 2010 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm prior to the 5:00 pm memorial service.
