Elmer R. Shippee

Elmer R. Shippee, born January 5, 1918 died peacefully at South County Hospital surrounded by family on March 3, 2010. He retired as Chairman of the Board of E. W. Shippee & Sons, Inc. insurance agency in 1997 after 62 years there.

He was the husband of the late Virginia Cook Shippee, son of Harold R. and Beatrice Wright Shippee. He was brother of the late Elizabeth Shippee, Barbara Dill, Harold Shippee, and survived by Nathan Shippee of Old Lyme, CT. He leaves five children, Joan Hatcher of Allenwood, PA, Barbara Strassman of Sharon, MA, the Reverend Richard Shippee of Providence, RI, Russell Shippee of Wickford, RI and Stephen Shippee of Wickford, RI, 17 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

He was a graduate of Pawtucket High School and Aetna Insurance School. He was a member of Jenks Lodge, F&AM Scottish Rite, Palestine Temple Shriners and St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Wickford.

He served as Director of Matec, Inc. and Prudential Funds, Inc., was a member of East Providence Rotary, Chairman of the Board of East Providence YMCA, Treasurer of Squantum Association, member of the Board of Community Preparatory School, member of the East Providence Republican Town Committee, North Kingstown Republican Town Committee and an alternate delegate to Republican National Convention that nominated Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Served as Master Councilor of Pawtucket DeMolay and State Master Councilor of RI DeMolay and member of Pawtucket Jr Chamber of Commerce, Organizer and first President of Providence Jr Chamber of Commerce and Organizer and first President of RI Jr Chamber of Commerce, Vice President and then Treasurer of US Jr. Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the RI Council of Community Services. He was Senior Warden at St. Michael's Church in Rumford, Senior warden at St. Paul's Church of Wickford, Chairman of the Episcopal Charities, Finance Committee Chairman and then Treasurer for the Episcopal Diocese of RI.

US Airforce from 1942 – 1945. He was the former President of Fosterian, Inc., Treasurer of Providence-Worcester Railroad, Member of the Sons of American Revolution, direct descendant of Roger Williams and Abraham Lincoln.

His Requiem Eucharist will be held Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 10:00 am in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Wickford, 55 Main Street, North Kingstown. Burial will be private. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or a charity of one's choice would be appreciated.
