Timothy John O'Connell, 63, a longtime Jamestown resident, died on November 19, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. Mr. O'Connell was born in Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts on June 20, 1947 to Thomas G. and Clara B. O'Connell.
Mr. O'Connell moved with his family to Jamestown shortly after the 1954 Hurricane and resided on High Street. He worked for the Town of Jamestown during summer vacations in his high school years.
He graduated from Rogers High School in Newport in 1965. He later attended the University of Rhode Island and was employed on survey crews constructing both the I-95 New London, Connecticut Bridge and the Jamestown-Newport Pell Bridge. Residences in his early years included Standish Road on Shoreby Hill, and two on Bay View Drive. Tim began his career with the Jamestown Police Department. He served as both a Special Police Officer and Dispatcher during his career of over thirty years.
During his career, he handled thousands of calls from anyone needing assistance in Jamestown. From lost dogs to fatalities, he was known as the consummate professional. With an encyclopedic knowledge of Jamestown, he was often able to render expert directions to Jamestown first responders, and received numerous commendations for his excellent work.
For many tourists and travelers stopping at the Police Station, he was an ambassador of good will for the community. He was a well known figure at the Jamestown Deli during early morning hours where he had a smile and kind word for all.
He resided on Bayberry Road with his wife and three children for many years, and later resided with his oldest son Matthew in Warwick prior to his illness and hospitalization at Kent County Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital and Kent Regency Center. He was predeceased by his wife, Linda (Williams) O'Connell. He leaves two sons, Matthew of Warwick, Eric, of Boston, Massachusetts, and a daughter, Deborah, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. His mother, Claire O'Connell resides in Tiverton, RI, and his father, Thomas G. O'Connell, died in 2006. He is also survived by an older brother, the Honorable Thomas W. O'Connell of Alexandria, VA, and two younger sisters, Sally Pezanko of Plymouth, Massachusetts and Laurie Fischer of North Providence.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at 10:00 am in St. Mark Church, 60 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown to which relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be private. Calling hours respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center, 20 Powel Avenue, Newport, RI 02840 would be appreciated.
