Elizabeth “Betsy” (Sharpe) Lincoln, age 81, of Fishing Cove Road, North Kingstown, died on February 23, 2010 at South County Hospital. She was the wife of John L. Lincoln IV, who died in 2000. She had been previously married to the late Stephen A. Greene, Jr.
Born in Providence, RI on July 22, 1928, the daughter of the late Walton Sharpe and Martha (Winslow) Sharpe and sister of the late Eleanor (Sharpe) McLaughlin, she had lived in North Kingstown since 1978.
Mrs. Lincoln was an Admissions Counselor at the University of Rhode Island from 1964 to 1966 and Associate Professor of English at the former Rhode Island Junior College from 1966 to 1976.
She leaves a son, Christopher Winslow Greene, a daughter, Daphne Kapolka, a daughter-in-law, Ruth Lincoln, and eight grandchildren. She is also survived by three nieces, Betsy Kuchinke, Lynne McLaughlin, and Susan McLaughlin.
She was a long time activist for peace and human rights, a poet and writer whose poems and articles occasionally appeared in The Providence Journal and in various other newspapers and literary magazines.
Devoted to social justice causes, she was active at Amos House and Habitat for Humanity, delivered medical supplies to Nicaragua, and worked in the ministry in Costa Rica. She also sponsored refugees from war torn areas. Voung Tang, Dung Tran, and their families became a treasured part of hers.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul's Church in Wickford, RI at 2 PM on Saturday, March 6. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island 1085 N. Main St., Providence, RI 02904 or St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 55 Main St., Wickford, RI 02852.
