James Russell Hutchins, 84, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at South County Hospital. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was a son of the late Harold W. Hutchins and Gwendolyn (James) Hutchins. He was the loving wife of Carol (Cathcart) Hutchins. Jim and Carol recently celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary.
Just out of high school, Jim served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre of War. He was a B.A.R. man, because he was a “big, powerful, and athletic kid.” He was honored to have served his county in the fighting 69 th Regiment.
After the war, he went to New York University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. He worked as a Sales Representative for Hayden and Tenneco Companies while living in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Most of all, Jim loved his family and was very much involved with them in all of their activities, including: skiing, swimming, and sailing. He was a wonderful, kind man, husband, Dad, Papa, Uncle, friend, our “Gentleman Jim.”
Besides his wife, he is survived by his four children: Nancy L. Hutchins of Redding, California, Lindsay A. Hutchins of San Francisco, California, Ross A. Hutchins of North Kingstown, and James H. Hutchins and his wife Mary Ann of North Kingstown. He was the loving grandfather of James, Ashley, Stephen, and Forrest. He was the brother of the late Hastings Hutchins and Gwen Hunter. Jim also leaves numerous extended family members, friends, and neighbors who will all miss him deeply.
His funeral service was held on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 11:00 am in THE CRANSTON-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME of Wickford. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery, Wickford. Calling hours were held on Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
