The Reverend Father Roger G. Champigny, 78, pastor emeritus of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Warwick, RI, died on Saturday, October 9, 2010. Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, son of the late Albany Joseph and Rosaline (Lanoue) Champigny.
He attended St. Cecilia School and St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket. In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at Our Lady of Providence Seminary in Warwick, RI and St. Paul Seminary in Ottawa, Canada. He was ordained a priest on June 4, 1960 in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Providence by The Most Reverend Russell J. McVinney, Bishop of Providence.
After a summer assignment at Assumption Church in Providence, Father Champigny served as assistant pastor in the following churches: St. John in Slatersville (1960-63); at St. Joan of Arc in Cumberland (1963-71); and at St. Jude in Lincoln (1971-77). In 1975, he was appointed Moderator of Mt. St. Francis Day Care Center in Woonsocket and in September 1977, pastor of Christ the King Church in West Warwick. In July 1990, he was transferred to St. Catherine of Siena Church in Warwick and remained there until his retirement as pastor emeritus in July 2005. After retirement, Father Champigny lived at Saint Joan of Vianney Residence in Providence and later at the Villa at St. Antoine in North Smithfield.
He is survived by his brother, Norman R. Champigny and his wife Joan of Seekonk, MA, two nieces, one nephew, and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was a brother of the late Sr. Paul Rita Champigny, S.U.S.C.
A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for the repose of his soul will take place on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at 10:00 am in Saint Catherine of Siena Church, 3250 Post Road, Warwick. Burial will follow in Nortre Dame Cemetery, Pawtucket. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at St. Catherine of Siena Church. A Parish Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm. Kindly omit flowers.
