John J. Canham, Esq., 76, of Narragansett, died Tuesday at South County Hospital after being stricken at home. He was the beloved husband of Jean H. (Marso) Canham for 53 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Lawson C. and Alice H. (Regan) Canham.
Mr. Canham was an Attorney at Law with Canham and Sinesi. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy, class of 1951, received his B.A. from Providence College in 1955 and received his Doctor of Juris Prudence from Suffolk University Law School in 1969. He was commissioned as 2 nd Lieutenant in The United States Marine Corps in 1955 and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain in 1959 and then served in The Rhode Island State National Guard Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Canham was an Air Traffic Controller with the Federal Aviation Agency from 1957 until 1981, serving at Logan, Quonset Point and T.F. Green Airports.
He entered private Law practice in 1970. He was a member of the R.I. Bar Association; a member, past president and Hall of Fame Inductee of the Trudeau Center; a member of American Legion Post 15, where he served as legal advisor; and member of Kent County Memorial Hospital Corporation, East Greenwich Zoning Board, The Squantum Club, East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, East Greenwich and South County Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, where he served as president from 1984-1985, and was an East Greenwich Fire Commissioner
He was the beloved father of Jay Canham, Esq. of Warwick, Quinta Thorpe of East Greenwich, Heidi Gamache of Richmond, Geoffrey R. Canham of Warwick and Kristin C. Conville of East Greenwich. Loving grandfather of nine. He was the brother of the late Alice E. “Cookie” Colgan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated Monday at 10:00 am in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Fourth Avenue, East Greenwich. Burial, with military honors, will follow in R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Sunday 4-8 pm in THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95).
